HOLLYWOOD, CA.

Mark Redfield has been tapped for a cameo in Larry Blamire’s new comedy-mystery film DARK AND STORMY NIGHT. Blamire debuted as a writer-director with the Sony released cult-favorite THE LOST SKELETON OF CADAVRA (2001) and followed it up recently with a sequel, THE LOST SKELETON RETURNS AGAIN (2008).
Redfield joins a fine cast headed by Daniel Roebuck (Matlock, The Devils Rejects, The Fugitive), Jim Beaver (Deadwood, Supernatural), Fay Masterson (Eyes Wide Shut, 2009’s A Christmas Carol with Jim Carrey), Kevin Quinn (Disturbia) and others. But here’s Blamire himself about the film:

“DARK AND STORMY NIGHT our 1930s old dark house murder mystery spoof, is going before the cameras June 9th (with lens caps off and everything...and real film in the camera--only it isn't, it's HD). Now one of the things I'm most excited about here is that the amazing Bob Burns (yes BOB BURNS) is dusting off the old gorilla suit to do a cameo. How excited am I about that? Have you seen the Ghost Busters TV show? Do you marvel at how dang outright hilarious anyone can be under all that hair and suit and hair? And what's cool is, Bob's just as excited as we are. He told me one thing he always wanted to do was play the gorilla in an old dark house movie. Well, doesn't this work out nicely. I am most happy about this.

Bob's rounding out a great cast--many of them the usual suspects. There always seemed to be four main categories in these victims-gathered-on-a-nasty-night scenarios. First, nosy protagonists like Danny Roebuck and Jen "Animala" Blaire who play competing reporters, with Dan Conroy as the hapless cabby in tow who brought them out to the gloomy Cavinder estate. You've of course got the greedy gathered heirs drooling over the will, like Brian Howe, Fay Masterson, James Karen, Andy Parks, Jim Beaver and Christine Romeo. Then there's the my-car-broke-down-can-I-stay-the-night kind of saps--in this case medium Alison Martin, idiot me, and racketeer Kevin Quinn. Then there's the lurking help as I like to call it; cockney maid Trish Geiger, suspicious butler Bruce French, and deeply disturbed cook Bob Deveau.

And there are cameos by lovely Betty Garrett, alternate cop/heavy character actor Tom Reese and the most excellently funny Marvin Kaplan. And of course we have to have an unctuous lawyer, played here by actor-writer-director Mark Redfield, which just gives me a chance to use the word unctuous. H.M. Wynant shows up looking for an escaped mental patient. Susan McConnell's in this too, but she's in her own category that I can't divulge under pain of death (or death of pain--something like that).

The set by production designer Tony Tremblay (check the imdb) is a knockout--this is a complete soundstage mansion I tell you--it's like a freakin' maze in there. Costumes by Kristin Burke and Kristina West are authentic and real and vintage and wonderfully good in ways that are positive. Music by Christopher Caliendo who knows more notes than practically anyone I know. Producer Sara Van der Voort is producing in ways that haven't been produced before. And to top it off, ace DP A.J. Rickert-Epstein is shooting on one of the original HD cameras from the 1930s--think of it! And you know how big those suckers were.

Add thunder and lightning, a hooded phantom, sliding panels, secret passageways, a missing letter, lots of murders and what do you have? Why, the movie we're making of course. What a coincidence! Should be ripping good fun what? And I swear I am not biased in any way as writer-director and have absolutely no vested interest in saying this. It'll be great. Really.”

So who will survive… and who will not survive quite as well? DARK AND STORMY NIGHT is scheduled to be released in 2009.

Jennifer Rouse, who played 'Ice Cream Girl in Chainsaw Sally, 'Mrs. Moran' in The Death of Poe, and who plays "Helen Gatewood" in the up-coming western film One-Eyed Horse by Wayne Shipley was recently cast as the lead in a film that starts filming in September called Stingy Jack. It's a horror film about a couple that moves to a small town that has banned Halloween.

Jennifer's co-star is Jason Priestly who you may know from Beverly Hills 90210 and other films.

CAPTAIN KRONOS REUNION

Recently, DR. JEKYLL AND MR. HYDE fan Eric Henderson, of Wisconsin, alerted us to a book for young monster kids: INTRODUCING MAD SCIENTISTS. Part of a series of books aimed and readers between the ages of 9 to 13, Eric directed us to page 8 of the 48 page mad scientist primer.

After author Burnette discusses the story of Jekyll and Hyde, focusing on the Fredric March version from 1932, we quote the following paragraph:

"Some of the other actors who have played the demanding double role of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde include Spencer Tracy, Michael Caine, Mark Redfield and John Malkovich."

For the second year in a row, the film festival and convention dedicated to films bizarre and outre has now grown from it's humble beginnings, and promises to continue to evolve into a major festival featuring the fantastic and strange! Held at the Thompson Center in Milwaukee's State Fair Park, guests and fans alike can't wait for festival directors Wayne Klingman and William Zenobian to announce the 2008 dates!

Jennifer Rouse, who Redfield Arts fans know from THE DEATH OF POE and CHAINSAW SALLY was featured as a guest this year, along with such popular celebrities as actor Larry Thomas (featured in the upcoming comedy POSTAL as Osama Bin Laden and famous as Seinfeld's "Soup Nazi") filmmaker Uwe Boll, who unspooled his new film POSTAL to an enthusiastic crowd on Saturday morning.

The effervescent Lloyd Kaufman of Troma Films was there all weekend, keeping the party going with all of his trade-marked lunacy and fun. Budding Scream Queens Scarlet Salem and Elske McCain helped Troma King Kaufman keep the crowds happy with their energy and enthusiasm.

Actresses Zoe Hunter and Anna Bridgforth added their sparkling personalities to the weekend festivities, letting fans know about their respective upcoming horror films and happily signing autographs. Filmmaker Mark Borchardt, made infamous by the fab documentary AMERICAN MOVIE, was busy on Saturday making an impromptu short film (with Mike Elliott) that featured parcically all of the festival's guests, including Jennifer Rouse, Lloyd Kaufman, Sofiya Smirnova and Anna Bridgforth). If it's anything like COVEN, it'll be a hit!

The creators of the online phenom CHAD VADER, Matt Sloan and Aaron Vonda, of Blame Society Productions, gave a terrific talk about the genisis and evolution of the web series and what the future holds, including previews of Season Two of CHAD VADER .

Cold Harbor, the award-winning film written and directed by Tom Brandau, produced by and starring Mark Redfield was one of five dramatic features chosen to screen at this year's inaugural South Dakota Film Festival. The three day event, held in Aberdeen, South Dakota opened to a sellout crowd on Friday evening (9/21/07) with the Upper Mid-west premiere of Sean Penn's latest directing effort "Into the Wild". Little Aberdeen,SD was one of only five cities chosen to open the film including Los Angeles, New York and Chicago. This decision was made, no doubt, because a good portion of the film was shot in several small communities around the state.

Cold Harbor screened to a very enthusiastic audience on Sunday afternoon. Director Brandau was on hand to introduce the feature and answer questions afterward. Mr. Brandau (who teaches Film Studies at Minnesota State University in Moorhead, MN) was also accompanied to the festival by fellow Film professor Kyja Kristjansson-Nelson (who had three films screened) and twenty-seven current and recently graduated Film students from the program. Tom, Kyja and the students attended all three days of the festival, viewing almost 40 films. Eight of those films were projects produced by MSUM Film students and faculty including: "Work", a docu- portrait of two working men, one a farmer and the other a mechanic, which was made by MSUM Film students Levi Moch ( a recent graduate) and Justin Ullyott in the Advanced 16mm. Production class. "Work" was honored with the award for Best Documentary Short. Levi Moch was in attendance and received the Best Doc. award at an opening night gala/ reception on Friday evening.

On Sunday, October 7th, Mark Redfield and Gene Leitner broadcast live on WCBM Talk Radio AM 680 for 2 hours from 8-10pm.

Guest host Gene Lietner interviewed actor and filmmaker Redfield about his recent film work and discussed THE DEATH OF POE and his work in the upcoming western ONE-EYED HORSE.

Within the two hour show, long-time radio drama aficianado Lietner also broadcast two episodes of the series SUSPENSE. The first was "Murder In G Flat" starring Jack Benny, and the second was "Death On My Hands" starring Phil Harris and Alice Faye. In keeping with the Halloween-themed show, Leitner treated listeners to the recorded reading of Poe's THE HAUNTED PALACE by Mark Redfield that can be found along with other short stories and poems by Edgar Allan Poe on the 3-disc The Death of Poe set.

KOSHA ENGLER HELD IN THE GRIP OF A CAT’S PAW

Kosha Engler, who starred in DR. JEKYLL AND MR. HYDE as MIriam, is currently appearing in the play CAT’S PAW by William Mastrosimone at The King’s head Theatre in London. REDFIELD WRAPS SINS

Mark Redfield recently wrapped shooting his scenes for the upcoming drama THE SINS OF THE FATHERS. Redfield plays “Hezikiah”. The film stars Richard Cutting (ONE-EYED HORSE). The film, a Stone Road Production directed by Jim Ball, will premiere sometime in 2008 and is being submitted to festivals around the country. Follow the films progress HERE. Redfield is currently in negotiations to star in the legal drama RULE ONE that will begin production later this year.

MORE ACTOR UPDATES FOR OCTOBER

Jennifer Rouse, star of and music composer for THE DEATH OF POE, recently wrapped shooting a brief scene with Russel Crowe in Ridley Scott’s new film BODY OF LIES.

Mike Flanagan, CHAINSAW SALLY’S Director of Photography, is currently editing a new show for the Discovery Channel called THE BONE DETECTIVE. The show debuts in 2008.

Elena Torrez, the star of DR. JEKYLL AND MR. HYDE, was in Baltimore in the late summer shooting a scene in a new film by Thomas E. Cole (DR. JEKYLL AND MR. HYDE and THE DEATH OF POE).

CHAINSAW SALLY’S April Monique Burril and Debbie Rochon (Redfield Arts’s upcoming THE TELL-TALE HEART) will star in a new film written and directed by JimmyO Burril entitled THE GOOD SISTERS. Production starts January, 2008.

Actor Carl Randolph (DR. JEKYLL AND MR. HYDE) recently performed in the play A PRAYER FOR OWEN MEANY at the Roundhouse Theatre in Bethesda, Maryland.

Tom Supensky who was an artist for our film Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hyde, is currently exhibiting his clay sculpture work at the McMaster Gallery in Columbia, South Carolina. The exhibit runs from September 25 - October 25, 2007!

Aberdeen, SD

The Redfield Arts film COLD HARBOR has been selected for this year's South Dakota Film Festival for the feature film competition! It will screen on Sunday September 23rd at 12:00pm.

Cold Harbor was written and directed by Tom Brandau and stars Mark Redfield, Richard Lopez, James Caffery, and Adam Raynen as the Broadhurst brothers who have to deal with the suicide of their father as well as their own relationships in a weekend spent at their father's beach house after his death.

The film is now available on DVD from Alpha New Cinema!

Also, screening at this year's South Dakota Film Festival, in the short film competition, is Tom Brandau's "Bill and Meriwether's Excellent Adventures" which is a comedy about the explorers Lewis and Clark.

COLD HARBOR filmmaker Tom Brandau recently wrapped production on a new short film called HEAVENLY SIGHT. Originated on 16mm, the film explores a boy's concept of death and the after-life. The film was shot in Minnesota, where Brandau currently teaches film at the University of Minnesota, Moorhead. More info as the film completes post-production!

The Festival of Fantastic Films returns to the Northwest, as Manchester Conference Centre and Days Hotel will host the thrilling event for the fourth consecutive year, from 31st August until 2nd September.

The sensational festival will celebrate the 18th Annual Convention of the Society of Fantastic Films, the only event of its kind in the Northwest. For three days, fans of horror, fantasy, and science-fiction movies will indulge in a terrific range of movie-related events: guest interviews, book signings, autographing sessions, discussions, Ramsey Campbell’s famous auction, special events, presentations, artshow and poster exhibition, themed dinner, parties and a number of movies, both old and new, running alongside each other throughout the festival.

Kevin Shinnick, who plays "Dr. Moran" in The Death of Poe recently played "Malvolio" in a production of Shakespeare's Twelfth Night for the Tri-State Actors Theater in Sussex, New Jersey.

Twelfth Night opened on Wednesday April 18th and ran until April 22nd, 2007.

Ken and Pam Kish, the masterminds behind the Ohio-based CinemaWasteland event, triumphed with another fabulous show! All reports seemd to indicate that they exceeded attendance expectations, and broke the attendance record of Saturday, which traditionally is always the most popular day for these weekend-long events.

How'd they do it? By inviting yet another great group of fan-pleasing guests!

The guest list for this sping's Cinema Wasteland included: JimmyO and April Burril (Chainsaw Sally), Steve Railsback (Helter Skelter, The Devil's Rejects), Marilyn Burns (The Texas Chain Saw Massacre), Eileen Dietz (The Exorcist), Jonathan Haze (Monster From The Ocean Floor, The Terror), Caroline Munro (The Golden Voyage of Sinbad, The Spy Who Loved Me) plus many others.

For us, a screening of CHAINSAW SALLY, followed by a Q&A, went over extemely well, and copies of the DVD and that of THE DEATH OF POE sold like preverbiale hotcakes. We were also able to make available the new release of Tom Brandau's COLD HARBOR, and , although not a horror film, it was eagerly picked up by the friends who stopped by the table to say hello.

The weekend was a whirlwind of meeting with old friends and making new ones. Screenwriter Charles B. Griffith was a crowd-pleaser with his stories on working on films like Little Shop of Horrors. The wild Canadians Hugo Bissonnet and David Aubin of the upcoming website HorrorBank.com seemed to be everywhere interviewing celebs for their site. Caroline Munro kept a steady, long line of fans all weekend, while Robert Grenville Evans offered drawings of fans with her. A wonderful keepsake.

The 2007 Fargo Film Festival ended this past Saturday night, marking it’s most successful year ever! This year’s festival (March 7th – 10th.) included over 70 films, from 30 states and seven different countries including Canada, England and Denmark. The films submitted constituted works from every genre including narrative shorts and features, documentary shorts and features, student films, animation and experimentals. The experimental category was especially vibrant this year, receiving three times more submissions than last year. This was due in large part to the extensive recruitment efforts put out by Kyja Kristjansson -Nelson, the chair of this years experimental/animation committee. Kyja (an award-winning filmmaker herself) contacted dozens of fellow experimental and animation filmmakers she knew personally or had come into contact with while attending other festivals and solicited their work for the Fargo fest. The result was a large number of submissions representing a variety of styles and content.

Over the course of the festival several thousand enthusiastic filmgoers were treated to a number of award winning feature length and short films including: “Fission” , a beautifully crafted piece of computer generated animation, “ They Walk Among Us”, a very funny mockumentary look at zombie rights, and “East of Euclid”, a feature comedy that dealt with a Russian ex-patriot high stakes gambler and his exploits living in early 1970’s Winnipeg, Canada.

Among the highlights of this year’s festival was the screening of “The Death of Poe”, a haunting dramatic feature which chronicles the last days of the life of Edgar Allan Poe. “Poe”, written, directed and starring Mark Redfield played to a very large and enthusiastic crowd. I did a post screening Q & A which went so well and was so engaging that the session had to be ended before it was over in order for the next scheduled film to be screened. The post screening discussion continued out in the hospitality area of the Fargo Film Fest. Those in attendance commented on the films haunting, surreal cinematography; it’s creative use of sound design and the overall quality of the cast, especially the strong and sure handed performance of Mr. Redfield in the title role. A few of the filmgoers commented that
“Poe” reminded them of David Lynch’s “Elephant Man” and complimented Mr. Redfield on his visual aesthetic as a director. Needless to say, the 2007 Fargo Film Festival screening of “The Death of Poe” was a resounding success.

According to convention maestro Dave Hagen, Monster Mania 7, held this past February 16-18, 2007 was a smashing success and drew one of the shows largest crowds ever! Hagen's show, held at the Crown Plaza Hotel in Cherry Hill, New Jersey, is now held three times per year.

For the studio home team, Mark Redfield and Jennifer Rouse were on hand signing copies of THE DEATH OF POE and CHAINSAW SALLY for eager fans.

CHAINSAW SALLY was a big success, as the screening of the film on Saturday was standing-room-only for the couple of hundred fans who caught it on the big screen, while distributor Shock-O-Rama sold literally cases of the DVD to rabid fans of Chainsaw-weilding Sally and her brother Ruby!

The star of CHAINSAW SALLY, April Monique Burril, was on hand to sign the DVD's and pose for the dozens of photos requested by fans. TEXAS CHAIN SAW MASSACRE's Gunnar Hansen was also madly and tirelessly signing autographs all weekend. The line he generated every day was truly amazing, and Gunner never once complained as the parade of his many, many fans kept him continuously chatting and signing copies of SALLY and other memorabilia. Writer-director JimmyO was there to sign as well, and archived the events on video for all to see on YouTube in the near future.

Main guests who drew crowds all week-end long included Tobin Bell of the SAW film phenom, as well as the usual mix of exciting guests that can be found at every Monster Mania event, such as: Larry Storch, William Forsythe, Kane Hodder, Tom Atkins, Sid haig, Emily perkins, Patricia Quinn, and Vincent DiFate.

A spectacular MONSTER SQUAD re-union was held, with most of the cast in attendence, including Fred Dekker, Duncan regehr, Andre Gower, Ryan Lambert, Ahsley bank, Tom Woodruff, Jr., and Tom Noonan (who kept mistaking Mark Redfield all weekend for an old college buddy)!

The ever lovely Caroline Munro was there, enchanting her many fans. Crispin Glover was in attendence with daily screening of his film WHAT IS IT? and causing quite the controversy, as some guests actually complained about the content to the convention's management! But that's what puts the con in controversy! Regardless, Glover was as charming as ever and stayed extra hours with his fans answering questions and signing autographs.

MONSTER MANIA CON 8 will be May 18-20, 2007.

Tom Brandau's award-winning drama COLD HARBOR, which has been playing film festivals and winning accolades all of the US, is getting reading for a spring, 2007, DVD release!

Writer-director Brandau has been meeting with Mark Redfield and editor Wayne Hipley and discussing and planning the extras for the release. In addition to a "Making Of" documentary and the usual audio commentary extras, a new music video for the title song, Mike Lane's "Playing It Dead" will be shot and edited in January. For those Poe fans who haven't visited Ain't It Cool News in the last couple of weeks, top Ain't It Cool honcho Harry Knowles has been moderating a terrific talkback/Q&A session with Sylvester Stallone and his fans to promote the release of Stallone's ROCKY BALBOA. Of interest to Poe fans, Stallone discusses (in several entries) his twenty-year-plus dream of making a biographical film of Edgar Allan Poe. For a year or two, Robert Downey Jr. was touted as the actor to play Poe, but his name is never mentioned by Stallone. Currently, the IMDB states the start date of Stallone's film POE to be May, 2007.

Walden Media, the company behind the NARNIA films and other family-friendly fare, recently announced an upcoming Poe film, and have engaged Clive Barker to do the script!

The as-yet untitled film is about a group of kids that, while investigating the mytery of Poe's death, unleash the monsters from his stories, and must seek the help of the ghost of old Edgar to put things right! Obviously intended for a younger audience, the project sounds to us like a mixture of THE CANTERVILLE GHOST and GOONIES. But we can't wait to see what Barker comes up with!
